Name days in Greece
In Greece many people celebrate their name day as happily as, and often more than, their birthday. A name is linked to a saint or a feast of the Orthodox Church, and the day that saint is remembered is the name day.
The custom is to say “χρόνια πολλά” with a message or a phone call, or to drop by with something sweet. That is why it matters to remember in time.
Not every name has a feast of its own: those that do not usually celebrate on All Saints’ Sunday. Other feasts have no fixed date but depend on Easter, so they change every year. Giortaki works these out for you.
Your contacts stay with you
Giortaki is made to help you remember, not to track you.
- Contacts and photos are read only on your device and are not sent anywhere.
- There is no account, no ads and no tracking.
- Contacts permission is asked only when you tap “Import from contacts”.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes. There is no subscription and no in-app purchase.
Do I need an account?
No. Open the app and use it.
What happens to my contacts?
They are read only on your device, when you tap “Import from contacts”. They stay there and are not sent anywhere.
Is there an Android app?
It is coming soon to Google Play. Meanwhile Giortaki is available for iPhone and as a website.
Where do the dates come from?
From the calendar of the Orthodox Church of Greece. Name days that depend on Easter are worked out each year.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The dates update by themselves when there is a connection.
When is my name day if my name has no feast of its own?
Names without a feast of their own usually celebrate on All Saints’ Sunday, eight weeks after Easter. Giortaki works it out each year.
Why does the same name day fall on a different day each year?
Feasts tied to Easter move with it, because Orthodox Easter has no fixed date. Giortaki finds the right day for each year, so you do not have to look it up.
Can I add people without importing contacts?
Yes. Type a name and add a birthday, a photo and a star. Importing from contacts is optional.
What does the star do?
The star marks the people you always want first. You can ask for reminders only for them, so the app does not notify you about everyone.
How do I send a wish?
Pick a ready-made wish in the app and open it in Viber, WhatsApp or SMS. You can also call with one tap.
Can I search a name typed in Latin letters?
Yes. Type the name in Greek or in Latin letters (Greeklish) and find its name day, even if you spell it differently.
What is the difference between giorti.app and giortaki.gr?
giorti.app is the page of the mobile app. giortaki.gr is the name-day calendar on the web, where you see who celebrates today and every date without downloading anything.
Is there a website too?
Yes. You can see who celebrates today and the whole calendar at giortaki.gr (in Greek).
